Trust no one beneath a red sky. Seven years ago, the sky split open and fell from the sky - 'Rakes', the dead-eye filthy creatures. Humans were forced underground, the ones who survived, and every teenage survivor is drafted into the Black Guard to slay the rakes, search the ruins, protect the ones who live above, and find a way to seal the sky before something far worse comes through. Lya has been fighting since she was old enough to pick up a weapon. What she won't tell anyone is that when she was fifteen, she touched something that had fallen from the sky, that wasn't a rake and survived with a scar that has since burned away on her neck. Now at nineteen, she's allotted to a new unit with Nevan, a boy who has despised her from afar for long. Neither knows what the thing sleeping within her scar is or that it's about to awaken.

"Tizmat..." His voice was a rough whisper, as if her name itself was forbidden on his lips. "Tum mujhe bilkul bhi pasand nahi karte, haina?" She tilted her face up, her trembling fingers clutched in his hand. His grip on her hand tightened, anchoring her to him even as he tried to push her away. "Kahete hai ke, nafrat bhi mohabbat ki ek shakal hoti hai," He murmured, his gaze burning into hers, daring her to look away. Her heart slammed against her ribs as her body swayed into the dangerous warmth of his chest, close enough to feel his every breath, yet not close enough to belong.
